Step 1: DO SOMETHING
Literally. Go out and DO SOMETHING.
It's very easy to hide behind a keyboard, voicing your judgement of other people's beliefs and actions with no real confrontation. It's easy to delete the comment, or the person who's opinions differ from your own without ever having to reconcile your own belief system. It's easy to push things to the side or ignore the problem or the facts or blame others instead of taking responsibility for your own actions. It's easy.
When did we become a society of people who choose to take the easy way; who choose to blame others for our circumstances instead of realizing that we alone have the power to make change in our lives - to better ourselves and work towards becoming better human beings?
When did we become so self-centered that we forgot that our actions do not just affect us, but those who surround us, love us... put up with us at our best, and our worst?
When did we stop believing that putting simple kindness out in to the world could make it better; that truly caring for those around you and giving grace and forgiveness and having empathy were things that are needed every day in this world?
I may not know much, but I do know this: We do not have to practice misery. Life gives us enough of that on it's own. So maybe instead of letting things divide us, we should be looking for the things that will bring us together.
Maybe, just maybe, spending some time making our own little corner of the world better would inspire others to do the same. It may not seem like much, but I have seen first hand what a simple kindness can do - what taking the time to make someone else's day just a little bit better can do - what not being an asshole can do...
Stop spending your time being an armchair coach, a backseat driver... a social media activist. Instead, go out in to your community and volunteer. Make change. DO SOMETHING.
